Cure for dogs itchy skin...?

I have a 5 month old GSD. I have had him on Frontline Plus since he was 8 weeks old. For about the past month he has been itching a lot. I took him to the vet to have a skin scrapping done and they said every thing was fine that it was probably allergies. They had me put him on Benadryl for a week. However,, the Benadryl gave him the runs.. Anyways..I got him medicated puppy shampoo for dry, itchy skin but it only temporarily helps...What else can I do????

Cure for dogs itchy skin...?
#1 - You don't say what you are feeding but I would be willing to bet it has corn and wheat in it. These are empty fillers and one of the primary causes of food-based allergies. Ironically, Hill's Science Diet, which many vets will try to sell you for skin/coat issues also contains corn and/or wheat...

I'd suggest getting him on Canidae All Life Stages or Wellness Fish %26amp; Sweet Potato

Both are "premium" foods, but reasonably priced; made with all-natural human grade ingredients of US origins.

This formula works well for dogs with allergies. I feed my guys Canidae but one has seasonal allergies (to grass) so along about August he goes onto the fish %26amp; sweet potato diet in order to keep his fur. Before we switched to the Canidae he looked a lot like the Velveteen Rabbit (you know, all the fuzz loved off the edges) about 6 monhs out of the year. Now he's actually re-growing hair in areas where he had none for years. We joke that Canidae put hair on his chest.

#2 - Actually bathe less as even gentle shampoos strip the coat ofessential oils.

#3 - You can try putting a tablespoon of olive oil on his dinner each night.

#4 - Fish oil capsules (from pharmacy area at Wal-Mart) are relatively inexpensive and contain omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, which help maintain skin and coat health. One a day should suffice. This would be instead of the olive oil, not in addition to it.

NO raw eggs as some will probably recommend as they may contain salmonella.
Reply:Maybe talk to your vet about putting him on Cortisone or some other steroid if the shampoo doesn't work.

Or, try going to a good groomer and see what they can suggest or do.
Reply:i would give him a oatmeal bath the one that babies use should be gentle enough.
Reply:My dog a yellow lab , she had kind of them same thing since she was little . shes 3 now , but the pills the doctor gave us for it made her start to have seziers [really scary] but i would try vitamins for dogs and all natural treats it helped her a lot . [:

Reply:I would look into the allergy theory a little more. My sister's 8 month old pit bull/Lab mix had really itchy skin on her back, near the base of her tail. Someone at Petco suggested maybe she was allergic to corn, so my sister decided to switch to a dog food that had no corn or cornmeal in it. It worked like magic. In no time, the itching stopped and the fur on her back that she had scratched and chewed off grew back in. If your dog isn't allergic to corn meal, maybe your vet can help figure out what he's allergic to.
Reply:I had the same type of problem for my cat. she got little bumps and would scratch at them alot. I just put some normal lotion on the bumps a coupe times aday and when she really itched. That seemed to help alot
Reply:Anything stressful going on in the house, or anything wild? Dogs scratch and yawn when they are stressed (in dog language).
Reply:my dog used to scratch himself until he was red and sore, sometimes the skin was even slightly broken so that he would bleed a little. we took him to the vet and gave us a wash but that made it worse for the poor guy. we ended up using neem soap and aloe vera rub. it worked.
Reply:I have used pills with yeast and garlic that are available in any pet store. I can't remember the name because I ran out about a month ago and never bothered to write it down but I would know it when I see it. Anyway, my dog stopped scratching within 2 weeks of her daily dose. By the way, two positive side effects are a very noticeable reduction in shedding and the dog has never had a flea on her since. Even without any other flea treatments. Great huh?
Reply:OUR 6 YR OLD CHIHUAHUA-TERRIER SCRATCHES UNTIL SHE LOST ALL HER HAIR ONE TIME...MY HUSBAND TOOK HER TO THE VET AND HE SAID SHE WAS ALERGIC TO FLEAS...EVEN JUST 1 FLEA.... HE GAVE HER SOME KIND OF SHOT AND SHE QUIT SCRATCHING, AND HER HAIR GREW BACK.THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN THE SUMMER.

THE VETS NAME IS DR. KAINER IN

FLATONIA, TX. 361-865-3541 THIS IS THE

NUMBER...HOPE IT HELPS.
Reply:Da dog might have food allergies !
Reply:My Chow/Lab cross has really dry skin and will chew herself raw. Our vet told me to put olive oil in her food or feed her a raw egg. They both have amino acids to help moisturize the skin.
Reply:you need to have the dog allergy tested to find out just what it is he is allergic to. They may even suggest allergy shots given once every 10 days days made in a special mixture just for his allergies.

If its a food allergy its most likely wheatand or corn. Try feeding him Inova dog food, made with no grains. Also you can buy Eagle holistic fish (canned) fish is very good for them and they seem to love it. Also he should be on a fish oil capsule every day to keep his coat glossy and not dry.

if its not a food allergy then its envrioimental, the allergy tests will cover that.

good luck
