Banana allergy? read on?

does anyone else out there have a banana allergy because i do and have had all my life i was just wondering if it was rare or common as i havent met anyone else with this allergy i don't even no why i'm allergic to them even the skins give me a rash and the other year i drank a drink without realising it had banana in and ended up in hospital i swell up and my breathing is effected and i also get a blistery rash all over my body

Allergy to bananas is less common than peanut intolerance but simply because some people do not eat the fruit so they are not aware that they have it. Some persons have extremely severe reactions and, like you, have to be rushed to hospital with anaphilactic shock and the same symptoms as you had. Sadly this kind of intolerance stays with you for life and you have to watch the contents of processed food or ethnic dishes that may contain bananas. The good news is that it is not a common ingredient. It is generally a food easy to avoid and that people will not miss.

Reply:my sister-in-laws new partner has an allergy to bananas, he gets the same symptoms as you described if he goes near a banana or tastes banana

Reply:Yes, I'm allergic to bananas, too, but my reaction isn't as severe as yours. All that happens is that, if I eat one, my lips swell up. I have avoided the things since childhood and, for all I know, the allergy might have gone. It doesn't matter, though, because I don't like the taste of them anyway.

Reply:Never knew this allergy existed! Well, I guess you're not alone in this allergy! No banana split for you! I've only heard of elderly people wanting to avoid bananas because they make their bones hurt. Ever heard of that one? My Mom swears by it.
