What do skin allergies to cats look like?

Skin allergies in cats can be anything from redness,to open "hot spots" sores on the cat from the cat biting to relieve itching some scab over while others become infected, with a yellow discharge that may have an odor. Usually affected areas are on top of the tail and belly ears- even though the cat may not have the problem there they are the parts they can reach. Most common allergy is the flea, and just one bite can drive the cats nuts if they are allergic, as the cat ages the allergy gets worse. Fleas also leave their waste in the cats coat, that looks like pepper, if you see some specs that look like pepper but when wet it turns red, it's dried blood, from flea waste if the cat has any white colored hair this is a good place to check for flea dirt- then you would want to get the cat bathed by yourself or a professional groomer depending on his temperment, and at the same day use foggers in the house, this may have to be repeated in a week if this is the problem. Some cats have an overactive subateous gland that produces too much oil and they lick again on top of the tail and can cause an irritation this is not a allergy but something that needs to be cared for. I am a professional pet groomer and vet tech, and have been in this field over 20 years. I hope this helps but always check with your vet to be sure good luck kacy

like a rash on the surface of your skin. It may be slightly irritated as well.
Reply:flakey skin, hair loss, a rash maybe, little pimply bumps
Reply:I had a cat once who had skin allergies that bothered her so much that she pulled out her fur. There would be "raw" spots where she'd yanked out a mouthful. Thankfully the vet put her on medication that cleared it up.
Reply:Dry patches of flakey skin. Sometimes the skin can get red and inflamed. Hairloss in the area of the dry patch may also occur. To find out for sure, have the kitty looked at by your vet.
